Book a lesson where advised, check the forecast and lifeguard cover, and stay inside the flags when they are flying.

Fistral Beach in North Cornwall

Beginner surf guide in North Cornwall

Fistral Beach

In smaller surf around mid tide, beginners can learn at Fistral with one of the beach's surf schools. It is exposed to Atlantic swell and has strong currents, so follow the instructor's and lifeguards' directions rather than choosing an area unaided.

Best surfing tide
Mid - Cleanest shape around mid tide
Lessons & equipment
Fistral Beach Surf School - The surf school on the beach itself, running lessons for all levels plus board and wetsuit hire. Quiksilver Surf School Newquay - Lessons and hire from Esplanade Road, a couple of minutes from South Fistral. Surf Sanctuary - Small-group surf, SUP and coasteering sessions based at the Headland on the north side of the bay.
Lifeguard cover
RNLI lifeguards patrol daily through a long season, typically from early April to early November. Swim between the red and yellow flags.
Conditions & hazards
Fistral works through the tide but is at its best around mid water. It is exposed to Atlantic swell, currents strengthen as the tide runs out and high tide can produce a heavy break at the shoreline. Swimmers should use the red and yellow lifeguarded area.
Harlyn Bay in North Cornwall

Beginner surf guide in North Cornwall

Harlyn Bay

In a typical westerly swell around mid tide, Harlyn is sheltered enough for beginners to learn with the surf school on the sand. A northerly swell can make the waves much more powerful, so check the forecast and local advice first.

Best surfing tide
Mid - Gentle, well-shaped waves at mid tide
Lessons & equipment
Harlyn Surf School - Lessons for all levels plus walk-up board and wetsuit hire, coasteering and paddleboarding.
Lifeguard cover
RNLI lifeguards patrol daily through the main season, roughly early May to late September, with weekend and half-term cover either side.
Conditions & hazards
Harlyn faces north, so it is sheltered from the prevailing swell and often the calmest of the Padstow bays. Rips can still form in bigger surf, and the stream crossing the sand can affect water quality after heavy rain.
Perranporth in North Cornwall

Beginner surf guide in North Cornwall

Perranporth

In smaller surf from low to mid tide, Perranporth can suit beginners who take a lesson. Rip currents are strong here, so follow the lifeguards' directions to the area designated for surfing.

Best surfing tide
Low to mid - Sandbars work best on the drop
Lessons & equipment
Perranporth Surf School - One of the longest-running surf schools in Cornwall, teaching from a hut on the beach. Stoked Surf School - Lessons for all abilities plus board, bodyboard and wetsuit hire on the beach. Piran Surf - The town surf shop, trading since 1971, with board and wetsuit hire.
Lifeguard cover
RNLI lifeguards patrol daily through a long season, typically from early spring into late autumn, with extra cover at the Perran Sands end in busy weeks.
Conditions & hazards
Perranporth is one of Cornwall's most consistent surf beaches and works best from low to mid tide. Rips are a genuine hazard here and the town end narrows sharply at high water, so swim between the flags and check the tide before walking north.
Polzeath in North Cornwall

Beginner surf guide in North Cornwall

Polzeath

In smaller surf around mid tide, Polzeath's gentle gradient helps the waves break gradually and gives learners time to practise. Book a lesson and follow the lifeguards' directions, because currents strengthen as the tide runs out.

Best surfing tide
Mid - Best shape at mid tide, long walk out at low
Lessons & equipment
Surf's Up! Surf School - Polzeath's original surf school, running group and private lessons from age five upwards. Wavehunters Polzeath - Lessons, paddleboard sessions and hire from a base on the beach through the summer. George's Surf School - Small-group and private coaching for surfers who want to progress beyond a first lesson.
Lifeguard cover
RNLI lifeguards patrol daily from around mid May to the end of September, with weekend cover through the spring and October half term.
Conditions & hazards
Polzeath's gentle gradient can suit learners in smaller surf around mid tide, but the tidal range is large and currents strengthen as the tide runs out. Beginners should take a lesson and follow the lifeguards' directions to the area designated for surfing.
Watergate Bay in North Cornwall

Beginner surf guide in North Cornwall

Watergate Bay

In smaller surf around mid tide, Watergate Bay can suit beginners who take a lesson. The bay is fully exposed to Atlantic swell and strong currents can form, so follow the instructor's and lifeguards' directions.

Best surfing tide
Mid - Most sand and best shape around mid tide
Lessons & equipment
Wavehunters at the Extreme Academy - The main surf school on the beach, running group and private lessons plus SUP sessions. Blue Surf School - Board and wetsuit hire aimed at beginners, a few steps from the sand. Just Surf - Boards and paddleboards delivered to the beach or to your accommodation.
Lifeguard cover
RNLI lifeguards patrol daily through the main season, roughly early May to the end of September, with weekend cover around Easter and October half term.
Conditions & hazards
Watergate Bay is surfable at any state of tide, but mid water tends to give the cleanest shape. High tide covers most of the sand and currents can build quickly in bigger swell, so follow the lifeguards' directions before entering the water.
Poldhu Cove in South Cornwall

Beginner surf guide in South Cornwall

Poldhu Cove

When small, already-broken waves are reaching the bay, beginners can practise here with the surf school on the beach. Check the day's conditions with the instructors before entering the water.

Best surfing tide
Any tide - Dunes shelter the beach from the wind
Lessons & equipment
Dan Joel Surf School - Surf lessons for adults and children based right at Poldhu Cove, with wetsuits and boards included.
Lifeguard cover
RNLI lifeguards patrol seasonally, typically from mid-May to late September, daily 10am to 6pm. Swim between the red and yellow flags.
Conditions & hazards
Poldhu Cove is usable at most states of tide, with dunes giving shelter from the prevailing south-westerly wind. On days when small, already-broken waves roll into the bay, beginners can practise with the surf school from the beach.
