Your data
Privacy Policy
We keep this simple
Beach Notes does not ask you to create an account or sell your personal information. We use Google Analytics to understand how people use the site.
Information we collect
You can read every guide on this site without giving us any personal details directly. Google Analytics collects information about visits, including pages viewed, approximate location, browser and device information, referring pages and interactions with the site. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies to distinguish visits and produce aggregated reports.
Like any website, our server and hosting provider process the standard technical information that your browser sends with each request - such as the page requested, your IP address, browser type and the time of the request. This is used to serve pages, keep the site secure and diagnose faults.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to measure traffic, understand which beach guides are useful and improve the site's performance and content. We do not use Google Analytics to identify you by name, and we do not combine its reports with information intended to identify individual visitors.
Google processes analytics information on our behalf and may process data on servers outside the United Kingdom. Google's handling of this information is described in Google's Privacy Policy and its Google Analytics data safeguards.
Third-party services
Some parts of the site rely on services run by other organisations:
- Google Analytics measures visits and interactions as described above.
- Google Fonts serves the typeface used across the site, so your browser makes a request to Google's font servers.
- Tide predictions come from ADMIRALTY EasyTide and water-quality classifications come from the Environment Agency Bathing Water Quality service. Both are requested by our server rather than your browser, so those services do not receive your details.
- We link out to sites such as Swimfo, Safer Seas & Rivers, local businesses and travel information. Once you follow a link, that site's own privacy policy applies.
How we use information
Analytics and technical request information are used to operate, secure and improve the site, understand general usage patterns and diagnose faults. We do not use this information to show personalised advertising.
Managing analytics
You can block or delete analytics cookies using your browser settings. You can also install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. Blocking analytics does not prevent you from reading the beach guides.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have rights over any personal data we hold about you, including the right to ask what is held, to have it corrected or erased, and to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. You can read more about these rights on the ICO website.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the site or the services it uses change. The date below shows when this page was last revised.
