Fistral works through the tide but is at its best around mid water. It is exposed to Atlantic swell, currents strengthen as the tide runs out and high tide can produce a heavy break at the shoreline. Swimmers should use the red and yellow lifeguarded area.

Getting there

The beachfront Fistral car park puts you a few steps from the sand and fills first on a sunny day. Belmont Road and Dane Road are a five-minute walk away and are usually the easier option in high summer.

  • Parking: The privately run Fistral Beach car park sits directly behind the sand and uses number-plate cameras. Cornwall Council's Belmont Road and Dane Road car parks are a short walk away.
  • Dog rules: No seasonal dog ban. Dogs welcome year-round on the full beach. Keep under close control near the surf schools and lifeguarded zone.
  • Lifeguards: RNLI lifeguards patrol daily through a long season, typically from early April to early November. Swim between the red and yellow flags.
  • Tide watch: Little Fistral and the rocks below the headland can be cut off on a big spring tide. Check the tide before walking round from the main beach.

After the beach

Eat, drink & stay

You can eat well without leaving the beach, which is part of why Fistral gets so busy.

Local perspective

Local notes

Fistral is Newquay's best-known surf beach. It faces straight into the Atlantic and picks up swell frequently, while shifting sandbanks mean the most consistent part of the beach changes through the year.

That consistency is also the catch. On a good summer day the water is crowded and the car park is full by mid-morning, so come early or come out of season. If the swell is too big to enjoy, Harlyn Bay round the corner from Padstow is usually more forgiving.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is Fistral Beach dog friendly?

No seasonal dog ban. Dogs welcome year-round on the full beach. Keep under close control near the surf schools and lifeguarded zone.

What's the best tide for Fistral Beach?

Fistral is surfable through the tide, but mid water usually gives the best wave shape. High tide can produce a heavy shore dump.

Is Fistral Beach good for beginner surfers?

In smaller surf around mid tide, beginners can learn at Fistral with one of the beach's surf schools. It is exposed to Atlantic swell and has strong currents, so follow the instructor's and lifeguards' directions rather than choosing an area unaided.

Is it safe to swim at Fistral Beach today?

Check the Environment Agency Swimfo profile and Safer Seas & Rivers Service before swimming, and always swim between the red and yellow flags.

Where do you park for Fistral Beach?

The Fistral Beach car park is closest to the sand, with the Belmont Road and Dane Road car parks a short walk away.

Are there lifeguards at Fistral Beach?

Yes. RNLI lifeguards patrol daily through a long season that typically runs from early April to early November.

Ramps provide step-free access, beach wheelchairs can be hired in advance, and several cafés and restaurants overlook the sand.
