Before you set off
Today's snapshot
Watergate Bay is surfable at any state of tide, but mid water tends to give the cleanest shape. High tide covers most of the sand and currents can build quickly in bigger swell, so follow the lifeguards' directions before entering the water.
Plan your visit
Getting there
Both car parks sit at the top of the beach ramp on the coast road, so the walk down is short. The private car park is the first you reach from Newquay, with the council car park a little further along.
- Parking: A private car park sits closest to the beach ramp, with a Cornwall Council car park just along the road. Both fill quickly on summer weekends.
- Dog rules: No seasonal dog ban. Dogs welcome on the beach all year. Two miles of sand means ample space for dogs away from surf schools and busy sections.
- Lifeguards: RNLI lifeguards patrol daily through the main season, roughly early May to the end of September, with weekend cover around Easter and October half term.
- Tide watch: The bay narrows to almost nothing at the top of the tide. If you are walking the full two miles, set off on a dropping tide.

Local perspective
Local notes
Watergate Bay offers more room than Fistral when the main beach entrances feel crowded. Two miles of sand allow surfers, lessons and walkers to spread out, although conditions become less supervised farther from the lifeguarded area.
One thing worth knowing: Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall closed here in 2019 and the space above the beach became part of the hotel. The Beach Hut, Zacry's and the independent WAX are what you will find today, and all three are open to visitors as well as hotel guests.

Frequently asked questions
Is Watergate Bay dog friendly?
No seasonal dog ban. Dogs welcome on the beach all year. Two miles of sand means ample space for dogs away from surf schools and busy sections.
What's the best tide for Watergate Bay?
It is surfable at all states of tide, but mid water usually gives the best shape and leaves plenty of sand. High tide covers most of the beach.
Is Watergate Bay good for beginner surfers?
In smaller surf around mid tide, Watergate Bay can suit beginners who take a lesson. The bay is fully exposed to Atlantic swell and strong currents can form, so follow the instructor's and lifeguards' directions.

Is it safe to swim at Watergate Bay today?

Is Watergate Bay pram or buggy friendly?
