Local perspective
Local notes
The ferry is part of the East Portlemouth visit. Parking in Salcombe and taking the short crossing is usually simpler than driving around the estuary and relying on the limited spaces on the other side.
Once you are across, do not automatically stop at the first patch of sand. There are several beaches along this side of the estuary, and walking a little farther can make a big difference when the area beside the ferry is busy.
The sheltered setting means the water often feels calmer than the open coast, and there is usable beach across most tide states. Pack with the ferry journey in mind, check the seasonal dog signs, and leave time for The Old Stable or the longer walk to Village Farm Café rather than rushing straight back to town.
