BEGINNER SURFING IN NORTH DEVON

Start with the right conditions at Woolacombe, Saunton or Croyde - and take a lesson where the guide advises it.

Beginner surfing beach guides

These guides have explicit beginner-surfing advice, surf schools or board hire, tide guidance and safety notes. Conditions change with swell, wind and tide, so no beach is guaranteed to suit a first session. Book a lesson where advised, check the forecast and lifeguard cover, and stay inside the flags when they are flying.

Croyde in North Devon

Beginner surf guide in North Devon

Croyde

Only in smaller conditions and with a lesson. Croyde is powerful and becomes crowded quickly, so complete beginners will usually find gentler waves at Woolacombe or Saunton.

Best surfing tide
Mid - Best shape on the push or the drop
Lessons & equipment
Surf South West - An accredited surf school running group, private and adaptive lessons at Croyde. Surfing Croyde Bay - Lessons for all levels with small groups, changing rooms and a café on site. Croyde Bay Surf Hire - Surfboard, bodyboard and wetsuit hire beside the beach.
Lifeguard cover
RNLI lifeguards patrol through the main summer season. Swim between the red and yellow flags.
Conditions & hazards
Croyde is a mid-tide beach. At low water the waves can pitch forward and break across the bay at once, while high tide leaves very little beach and a heavy break at the shoreline. Beginners should only surf here in smaller conditions with a lesson; Woolacombe or Saunton are usually more forgiving alternatives.
Saunton Sands in North Devon

Beginner surf guide in North Devon

Saunton Sands

In smaller surf around mid to high tide, Saunton's waves tend to break slowly and give beginners more time to get to their feet. Take a lesson if it is your first session, and remember that lifeguard cover is not guaranteed.

Best surfing tide
Mid to high - Longer, better-shaped waves
Lessons & equipment
Saunton Surf Hire - Surfboard, bodyboard and wetsuit hire on the beach, with hot showers and storage. Walking on Waves - A surf school at Saunton running small-group and private lessons, including for young children.
Lifeguard cover
RNLI cover is not guaranteed at Saunton. Check the RNLI lifeguarded beaches listing before visiting if you plan to swim.
Conditions & hazards
Saunton is so flat that low tide pushes the sea a long way out and the waves become thin. Mid to high tide gives the long, peeling walls the beach is known for. Lifeguard cover here is not guaranteed, so check the RNLI listing before you plan to swim.
Woolacombe in North Devon

Beginner surf guide in North Devon

Woolacombe

In smaller surf, low water gives beginners long stretches of already-broken wave to practise on. Book a lesson if it is your first time; Surfing Woolacombe operates on the beach and Woolacombe Surf Centre runs lessons and hire from the village.

Best surfing tide
Any tide - Long, gently shelving sand
Lessons & equipment
Surfing Woolacombe - A surf school based on the beach itself, running lessons, hire and coasteering. Woolacombe Surf Centre - Surf lessons, paddleboarding and kit hire from the village on Barton Road.
Lifeguard cover
RNLI lifeguards patrol daily through the main season and at holiday weekends. Swim between the red and yellow flags.
Conditions & hazards
Woolacombe works across the tide because the beach shelves gently. At low water, already-broken waves roll towards the sand and give beginners more time to practise. From mid to high tide the waves become steeper and faster, particularly towards the Putsborough end.
