Mothecombe is best at low tide. Public access has traditionally been limited to selected days because the beach is part of the privately owned Flete Estate.

Local perspective

Local notes

The first thing I check with Mothecombe is whether the beach is actually open. Public access is limited because it sits on the privately owned Flete Estate, and arriving to find the gate shut is a fairly thorough way to ruin a beach day.

The second thing I check is the tide. Low tide opens up the widest stretch of sand at the mouth of the River Erme, while higher water leaves less room and brings a stronger estuary current. If you have a choice, I would plan the visit around low tide rather than simply turning up.

The small car park and uneven walk down make this a beach for packing sensibly. There is no hire on the sand and very little of the usual beach-day fuss, which is exactly the appeal. Schoolhouse Devon is handy for food nearby, but the real reason to come is the quiet estuary setting and the chance to see this stretch of coast without the summer crowds found further west.
