Local perspective

Local notes

Swanpool is straightforward to reach: park across the road and walk directly onto the sand. The bay is sheltered, but there is no lifeguard cover, so check conditions before swimming.

The lagoon behind the beach formed after the last Ice Age, when a shingle bar cut it off from the sea, and a culvert dug in 1826 created the brackish mix it has today. It is home to the only living UK population of a rare bryozoan, so it is worth a quiet look on the way past.
